THAT SPECIAL PLACE
Artist's statement
By Adrian R.
Sometimes I take brush in hand, having no idea when I'm going to paint. The urge to paint comes before the idea of what to paint.
'That Special Place' is one of those paintings. My imagination painted the place where I'd like to lean back during my remaining years. This doesn't mean I don't like the mountains, streams and rivers, forests or the plains, It's just that my mind's eye is partial to a secluded inlet cove where the ocean is caressed by warm, sun stroked breezes.
I've often been referred to as a mood artist. The mood I may be in, slides effortlessly into my brush, onto the canvas and results in a wonderful range of feelings which may be subtle, intense or with purpose. Often my paintings convey my feelings better than my words.
I paint a lot of sun rises and often think of that saying "today is the first day of the rest of my life"... which then leads me to another saying, "it's not what happens today: it's what I do with what happens today." Then comes the sunset which is the goodnight kiss of a day well lived. When I paint it, I share in its peace and quietude.
Hopefully, some of my paintings show that I'm truly interested in the environment, peace, survival of mankind and a spiritual approach to life. Diversity is among us and hopefully within us, leading to acceptance and understanding. If one of my paintings stimulates acceptance, brings pleasure, lightens a burden or moves the viewer to say "yes, I feel that", then my efforts have conveyed more than my words could have.
Creating works that don't necessarily make a statement or move someone in a direction other than visual pleasure or mental exercise is also part of my delight in painting. Some paintings aren't titled until they're finished. That challenges me to connect the experience with the message.
